Temperance Cottage
Only 4 miles away from the heart of the city of Durham, this detached cottage is situated in a rural aspect within the 3½ acre grounds of the owner’s home where there are free roaming chickens and two horses in the paddock. Perfect for exploring the area, Temperance Cottage sits in a great location with the traditional villages of Esh Winning and Ushaw Moor, both just over 1 mile away in either direction. Perfect for guests who enjoy a walking or cycling holiday, there are numerous walking paths and cycling routes that lead directly from the property and through rural County Durham. Popular walks follow the old railway tracks across to the city, or in the opposite direction, out through unspoilt countryside and woodland. The nearby nature reserve at Hedleyhope Fell is managed by Durham Wildlife Trust and consists of over 200 acres of heathland, perfect for exploring. Other popular walks lead up to Hedley Hill, Cornsay Colliery, Langley Moor, Esh Winning and Ushaw Moor. The perfect base for families, guests will find plenty to do and see in the area, with the very popular Diggerland attraction less than a 10-minute drive away and Hall Hill Farm just a little further on. Beamish Living Museum is also only 20 minutes away and really worth a day trip, and you can also visit one of the many events that run all year round which include traditional markets, an open air ice rink at Christmas and numerous seasonal events. Only 4 miles away from the historic city of Durham which has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, Temperance Cottage is also in the perfect spot for guests wanting to take a trip to the famous cathedral and Durham Castle. A thriving city all year round, guests will find a farmers’ market in the cobbled market place every Saturday, rowing boats on the River Wear, popular boutiques and high street shops, as well as a variety of excellent places to eat and drink. County Durham cricket ground is only a 10-mile drive away, so any guests with tickets to events there and cricket matches will find themselves very well situated at Temperance Cottage. A little further afield but still within a 45-minute drive, guests will be able to take a trip to Newcastle-upon-Tyne for The Sage and the Metro Arena, or Gateshead for the Metro Centre and the Angel of the North statue. For guests wanting to travel a little further up into Northumberland, Hexham, Corbridge and Hadrian’s Wall can all be reached within an hour’s drive, and Bamburgh and Alnwick just a little further. The beautiful beaches of Tynemouth, Seaton Sluice, Roker and Seaham are all less than an hour, east of the cottage too and a great place to spend a warm afternoon.
