Thatched Cottage is in a hamlet just outside Battle. It's detached, with a bit of land. The thatch is a proper old one, you see it right away.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, which is handy. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable, not just a museum piece, but it is genuinely old. The walls are wonky in places. The stairs are steep and twisty. The Aga heats the water, so the kitchen stays warm. The fireplace is big, with a bread oven.
There's a pub about half a mile away that does food. The nearest shop is in Battle, two miles. Battle is a small town with butchers, bakers, and the abbey ruins. You can get a train to London from there.
The garden backs onto Normanhurst Forest. You'll see foxes and badgers if you're quiet. You can walk straight out from the cottage.
The coast is about three miles. Hastings beach is shingle, with the fishing boats. Rye and Camber Sands are within a 20 minute drive. Bodiam Castle is about 15 minutes away by car. For a longer day out, the National Trust 1066 Country site has good information on the area.
What's there: plenty of parking, a washing machine, wifi, an enclosed garden. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and a highchair. It's not suitable for pets. Due to the thatch and low beams, it's not great for anyone with serious mobility issues.
