The Barracks @ East Neuk Orchards

The Barracks is a cottage in Arncroach, in Fife. It's semi-detached and in the grounds of our main house, but it's completely private for you. The name comes from it being used as officers' quarters in the war. It sleeps eight, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's got a 5 Star rating, so everything is in good working order and it's well equipped.

The living room has an open fire, which is nice on cooler evenings. There are some interesting original features, like the fireplace upstairs and some old mahogany fittings in the toilet. The stairs are typical for an old building, so they're a bit steeper than modern ones.

You have your own garden and there's parking right outside. There's a washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, and bedding and towels are included. We can take up to two dogs.

The location is rural, with views over fields down to the sea. It's quiet. You'll need proper boots if you want to walk in the grounds, as there aren't footpaths. Kellie Castle and its gardens are about a mile and a half away, which is a good walk. For shops and a pub, you need to drive about four miles to Pittenweem or Anstruther.

Pittenweem is a proper fishing harbour. You can see the boats coming in. Anstruther is a bit bigger and has the famous fish and chip shop. The Fife Coastal Path runs along the coast here, so you can walk to the different villages. There's also local fishing from the piers if that's your thing.

St Andrews is about a twenty minute drive. It has everything: the university, the cathedral ruins, good shops, and the beach. Obviously it's famous for the golf. You can be at the beach here in about ten minutes by car.
