Porthole Cottage

Porthole Cottage is in Allonby, on the Cumbrian coast. It's a bungalow, so everything's on one level, which is handy. It used to be stables, but it's a house now.

It sleeps six. Three bedrooms, one bathroom with a bath. The rating is 4 Star, which means it's well equipped and smart. There's a woodburning stove for the evenings, and WiFi.

The big thing is the location. It's right by the beach, maybe 50 yards away through a gate. Allonby's beach is sandy and long, looking out over the Solway Firth to Scotland. The village has a shop and a couple of pubs. The nearest pub is just across the road.

Inside, it's open plan. There are roof lights so it gets a lot of light. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a washing machine. There's parking on site. You can bring dogs, up to three.

For bigger days out, you can drive into the Lake District National Park in about 20 minutes. Bassenthwaite Lake is about half an hour away, and there’s a distillery there if that's your sort of thing. The wildlife park near there is good if you have children.

Maryport and Silloth are along the coast if you need more shops or want to walk the different harbours.
