The Hideaway is found in the centre of the highest market town in England, Alston in the North Pennines, thought to be one of the last undiscovered wildernesses of Britain. On the borders of Northumbria and Cumbria, and central in the North Pennines, which is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Enjoy a scenic ride through the beautiful South Tyne valley from Alston station on the South Tynedale railway, with vintage steam or diesel locomotives. Fishing, riding and golf are available nearby. Follow some of the local rambles or the Pennine Way. The glorious coast and countryside of Northumbria is within travelling distance, as are the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Borders.
There are water sports at Talkin and Kielder Water. Gateshead is only an hour away, with a large shopping centre, restaurants and a ten screen cinema. Alternatively, just stay home and relax with Alston’s quaint cobbled main street, a range of individual shops, character inns, restaurants and tea rooms. Within the area is an historical Roman fort and tourists will enjoy the museums, exhibitions and sites along Hadrian’s Wall.
