Anvil

Anvil is one of three places here at the old mill, just outside Dalbeattie. It's an apartment, not a house. It sleeps two, one bedroom and one bathroom. It's got a 4 Star rating, so it's comfortable and well looked after.

The main thing is the setting. It's right by the river, in a wooded valley. Very quiet. You can hear the water. The gardens are shared with the other properties and they're lovely, with spots to sit. We've seen kingfishers and red squirrels from the benches.

Inside, it's open plan. Everything you need is there: a washing machine, TV, bedding and towels are included. There's parking right outside.

For getting out, Dalbeattie Forest is on the doorstep. The mountain bike trails there are some of the best in the country. If you just want to walk, you can follow the river or head to the coast. Kippford and Rockcliffe are nice. The walk between them along the Jubilee Path is good, with a sandy beach at Rockcliffe.

Dalbeattie town has the basics: shops, a couple of pubs. For a bigger supermarket, you'd go to Castle Douglas, about a 15 minute drive. Kirkcudbright is a bit further, maybe 25 minutes. It's an artist's town, has a nice harbour.

If you want a day out, Threave Gardens are about half an hour away. So is Caerlaverock Castle, which is a proper ruin by the marshes. The whole Solway coast is within easy reach, plenty of beaches and coastal paths.
