Old Bank House is a holiday house in Barnard Castle. It used to be a bank, hence the name. It's Grade II listed, which means we can't just change the windows or knock walls down. It’s a tall, stone townhouse right on the market place.
It sleeps eight. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms. Two have en-suites. It’s got a 5 Star rating, which means everything is new and works properly. It’s comfortable.
The kitchen is at the back. It’s got a big table. The living room is at the front. They’re separated by glazed doors. The stairs are typical for a house like this, so they’re a bit steeper and narrower than in a modern home.
Barnard Castle town centre is literally outside the front door. There are shops, cafes, and a few pubs all within a minute’s walk. The castle ruins are about five minutes away on foot, down by the river. The Bowes Museum is a 15-minute walk. It’s a proper grand building with an interesting collection, including the Silver Swan automaton. It’s run by a charity, so you can find their latest opening times here: The Bowes Museum.
If you want to get out into the countryside, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is all around. High Force waterfall is about a 20-minute drive. For walkers, the Teesdale way is accessible from the town. The North Pennines AONB site has good information on routes and places to go.
Facilities wise, it has a dishwasher, WiFi, TV, and all bedding and towels are included. Parking is on the street outside, or there’s a public car park two minutes away. No pets, sorry.
