Ashlea
Ashlea is near Barnard Castle, on our farm. It’s a detached cottage, so it’s just you. It looks out over fields towards Eggleston. Very quiet up here.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, one bathroom. It’s got a 4 Star rating. It’s all on one level, which is handy. The heating comes from our biomass boiler, which runs on woodchip from our own trees.
There’s a wood burner in the living room. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a washing machine. The conservatory is nice to sit in, looks onto the garden. The bathroom has a double shower cubicle.
You can charge an electric car here, but there’s a small extra cost for that. Just let us know beforehand.
The nearest shop and pub are about two miles away, in Startforth. Barnard Castle is close. The ruins are worth a look, and the Bowes Museum is there. Good for a rainy day.
There’s a public footpath right behind the cottage. It follows the Deepdale River into Barnard Castle. For bigger walks, you’ve got the Durham Dales and the North Pennines close by. High Force waterfall is about a 30 minute drive.
Hamsterley Forest is good for cycling or a family walk, maybe 20 minutes in the car.
