The Byre

The Byre is just outside Eggleston village. It's on a farm, next to the main farmhouse, so you'll see sheep and cows in the fields. It used to be a cattle shed, hence the name.

It's for two people. One bedroom, one bathroom. Everything's on the ground floor and the doorways are wide, so it's flat and easy to get around. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and clean, but the main thing is it's quiet. You're just looking at fields.

The roof has these special tiles that generate electricity. So it's an eco-house. The heating and hot water come from an air source heat pump. It's very efficient and stays warm.

There's a wood burner in the main room, which is open plan. Kitchen, sitting area, dining table, all in one space. It's simple. There's a TV, dishwasher, washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring one dog. There's parking right outside.

The nearest pub is about a mile down the road in Eggleston. For a shop, you'll need to drive to Middleton-in-Teesdale, which is two miles. A car is pretty much essential here.

Barnard Castle is six miles away. That's the proper town with shops, the castle ruins, and the Bowes Museum. It's a good place to start. Durham City is about 25 miles east. The cathedral is worth the trip.

You're well placed for the North Pennines. For a longer day out, you can get to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, or Northumberland in under an hour and a half.
