Harbour Retreat is on the edge of the old town in Rye. It's a big Victorian house, detached. We had it fully renovated a few years ago, so everything works and it's in good order. It sleeps twelve, across six bedrooms, with four bathrooms. That's the main reason we got it, really, for big groups or families sharing.
The living spaces are large and open plan, so everyone isn't on top of each other. There are two separate living rooms as well, which helps if people want to do different things. It gets a lot of light. Outside, there's a private courtyard garden at the back.
It's got a 4 Star rating. All the usual things are included: bedding, towels, WiFi, a washing machine, dishwasher. There's a wood burner, but the central heating is good so you don't need to use it. We can take up to two dogs.
The location is the main thing. You're about a two-minute walk from the start of Rye's cobbled high street. There's a shop, a pub, and a restaurant literally 50 yards from the front door. The town itself is medieval, on a hill, so it's all old buildings and narrow lanes. You can just wander.
For the beach, you have a couple of options. Rye Harbour itself is about two miles away. It's a nature reserve with shingle beach and walking paths. It's quiet. For sand, Camber Sands is about a ten-minute drive east. It's a big beach with dunes.
Within half an hour you've got a few places. Hastings Old Town is worth a visit, about twenty minutes along the coast. Battle Abbey is about twenty minutes inland. If you're interested in vineyards, Chapel Down and Gusbourne are both nearby.
