The Old Barn is in Eastgate, which is a small village in Weardale. It's a converted barn, detached, so it's just you. The garden is a raised terrace that looks out over fields and the river Wear. It's a quiet spot.
The barn sleeps nine people in four bedrooms. There are three bathrooms, one is a downstairs shower room. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's a good size for a big family or two smaller ones. There's a wood burner in the main living area. The WiFi works.
The stairs are modern, not the steep cottage kind. One of the sofas in the separate sitting room folds out into a double bed, which is handy if you need the extra space.
Eastgate itself is quiet. The local pub is a short walk away. They serve food. From the door, you can get straight onto footpaths along the river. Weardale is good walking and cycling country.
Stanhope is about three miles away. It's the local market town. It's got shops, cafes, and an outdoor heated swimming pool that's open in the summer. The Durham Dales Centre there has local information.
For a day out, High Force waterfall is about a 25 minute drive. It's impressive after rain. Hamsterley Forest is roughly half an hour away for walking or mountain biking. Derwent Reservoir is in that direction too.
Further afield, Durham city is about a 40 minute drive. The cathedral and castle are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Barnard Castle is about 45 minutes away, the Bowes Museum is there.
Facilities: all the bedding and towels are included. There's a washing machine, dishwasher, a cot and highchair. You can bring two dogs. There's parking right outside. There's a BBQ you can use on the terrace.
