Heckberry Cottage is in East Blackdene, County Durham. It's detached, but right next to our house. You get the place to yourselves though. It's surrounded by our fields, about six acres. The track down to it is a bit rough, just so you know.
It sleeps two, maybe two adults and a couple of small kids because there's a bunk room. It's got a 3 Star rating. It's clean and comfortable, not luxurious. The cottage is old, from the 1800s. The stairs are a bit steep and the doors are low in places. That's just how it is.
The main room has the kitchen, dining and sitting area all together. There's a multi-fuel burner that heats the whole place. The view from the window is just fields, all the way to the Weardale valley. Sometimes there are horses in the field opposite.
Upstairs is a shower room, a double bedroom, and a small bunk room. It's compact.
The village, St John's Chapel, is about a mile away. There are two pubs, a tearoom, a café and a small shop. It's a proper dales village. You can walk there via public footpaths that start right from the door. The Weardale Way goes through our land.
Stanhope is 12 miles east. Killhope Lead Mining Museum is about five miles west, it's good for families. Alston, the highest market town in England, is over in Cumbria but not far. It's got nice shops and a market.
Within an hour's drive you can get to Durham city, the Lake District, or the Northumberland coast. Hadrian's Wall isn't far either.
Facilities: there's a wood burner, parking, a washing machine, TV, WiFi, and a garden area. Bedding and towels are included. We allow up to two dogs.
