Saunders Oast Barn is out at Guestling Green, between Hastings and Rye. It's a detached barn conversion. We rent the whole place. You get the garden and patio to yourselves, which looks out over fields. The neighbours have chickens and geese that sometimes wander over.
It sleeps up to nine people. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and each bedroom has its own bathroom. It's a 5 Star place, so it's comfortable and well-equipped, not just basic. Everything's on one level, which is good for access. The doorways are wide and there are grab rails in the bathrooms.
The main room is open plan. Kitchen at one end, living space at the other. The kitchen is big and has everything you'd need, including a dishwasher. There's a dining table and the sofas face French doors out to the garden. There's a TV and WiFi. We've also put in a small pool table for wet days.
The barn was rebuilt after the 1987 storm using the old beams, so the structure and the ceilings are all proper oak. The bedrooms are a good size because of it.
The local pub is about a mile away in Guestling. It does food. The nearest shop is in Three Oaks, about three miles.
You're about ten minutes by car from Hastings. The town has the castle ruins and the Battle of Hastings site is just inland. Rye is about fifteen minutes in the other direction. It's an old hilltop town with cobbled streets.
The coast is close. The nearest bit of decent shingle beach is probably at Fairlight, but it's all part of the Hastings Country Park. There are a lot of walking paths through there. For a bigger beach day, Camber Sands is about half an hour's drive.
In terms of what's here: there's parking right outside. Washing machine, BBQ, cot and highchair are all provided. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring up to two dogs.
If you're looking for other days out, National Trust Sussex and Visit 1066 Country have good information.
