Wellesley Retreat

Wellesley Retreat is a flat on the second floor of a listed building in Hastings Old Town. The building has a blue plaque outside saying it was the Duke of Wellington's headquarters once.

It's for two people. One bedroom, one bathroom. It's got a 5 Star rating, which means it's been done up to a high standard. It's full of antique furniture, some of which you can buy. The living room and the bedroom both have a view of the sea.

It's a few minutes' walk to the beach, the pubs, and the shops in the Old Town. The stairs up to the flat are quite a climb, so it's not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. It's also not for young children, or for stag or hen parties.

There's a roll-top bath in the bedroom. The kitchen has a dishwasher. There's no washing machine, but there's a laundrette a few doors down. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring up to two dogs.

You're right in the middle of the Old Town, so you get the noise that comes with that, especially during the festivals. There's always something on, like Jack in the Green or the seafood festival.

From there, you can walk to the funicular railway up to the castle, the Jerwood Gallery, or the pier. The mainline station is walking distance too, so you can get to London in about two hours if you want.

If you drive, Rye is about 20 minutes away. Eastbourne and Camber Sands are about half an hour. For wider planning, the National Trust looks after the cliffs and countryside around here, and Sussex Wildlife Trust has good information on the local area.
