The Old Forge

The Old Forge is on our farm in Shiplate, Somerset. It's attached to our house, but it's your own space. The building used to be a blacksmith's forge, so it's full of character. Exposed stone, lots of beams, high ceilings. It sleeps six, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's got a 4 Star rating.

The main living area is big, with a minstrel's gallery looking down. There's a grand piano in there. The stairs up to the gallery are a wrought iron spiral staircase. They're sturdy, but they are spiral stairs, so mind your head.

One bedroom is on the ground floor, leading off the living room. It has patio doors out to the garden. There's a wet room on that level too, which is good for accessibility. Upstairs, the twin room is in the gallery, and there's a double bedroom with its own ensuite.

Outside there's an Italian-style garden with benches, and a paved seating area that looks over our lake. It's quiet. You'll see herons and other birds. There's a picnic bench out there.

For facilities, it's got what you'd need: WiFi, TV, washing machine, dishwasher, a woodburning stove. Bedding and towels are included. There's parking right outside. No pets, I'm afraid.

The local pub is about a mile away, it does decent food. The nearest shop is a mile and a half.

In terms of things to do, Weston-super-Mare is the classic seaside spot, about seven miles of sand and a pier. Burnham-on-Sea and Clevedon are smaller and a bit quieter. Cheddar Gorge is a must, about a 20 minute drive. Wells is lovely for a day out, with the cathedral and Bishop's Palace. Glastonbury Tor is about 25 minutes away. If you want cities, Bath and Bristol are both within an hour's drive.
