Machermore Castle is ours. It's a 16th century castle on the River Cree, near Newton Stewart. It's in about 30 acres of its own woodland. It's old and it feels it.
It sleeps twenty people. Ten bedrooms, eight bathrooms. They're all en-suite. It's got a five star rating, so it's comfortable and well-equipped. The kitchen is huge, set up for big groups and even for caterers if you want them. There's a big banqueting hall. It's the sort of place people book for big family gatherings or special occasions.
You're on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, which is a massive area of woodland and hills. Good for walks, cycling, and wildlife. It's also a Dark Sky Park, so if the night is clear, you get a proper view of the stars.
Castle Douglas is about twenty minutes away by car. It's well known for food. Kirkcudbright, the artists' town, is a similar distance. Gatehouse of Fleet is closer and has a few places to eat and a visitor centre.
If you head west towards the coast, you can get to places like Portpatrick or the Mull of Galloway in roughly half an hour. The lighthouse at the Mull is the southernmost point in Scotland. The views from the top are something else.
The facilities are what you'd expect for a place this size. There's a games room, woodburning stoves, plenty of parking, and WiFi. All bedding and towels are included. No pets, I'm afraid.
