The Cottage

The Cottage is in Garlieston. It's a row cottage, so attached to neighbours on one side. You've got about 200 yards to walk to the beach, it's sandy there.

It sleeps six. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, which is handy. We take one well-behaved dog. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable, not ultra-modern. It's full of old features, which is nice but means some floors are uneven and the doors are a bit low in places. Just something to be aware of.

The owner is part of Clan Hannay, so there's a bit of that history around the place. Some tartan in one bedroom, old portraits. Their old seat, Sorbie Tower, is close by if you're interested.

There's a shop and a pub about 250 yards away. The pub does food. The village is quiet.

For days out, Wigtown is the book town, lots of shops. Whithorn has the historic dig and the priory. Newton Stewart is the bigger town for supermarkets, a cinema, and a swimming pool. It's about a 20 minute drive.

You can walk the Solway coast from here. There's fishing and sailing locally if that's your thing. The Mull of Galloway is a good drive for the lighthouse and views.

In the cottage: there's a woodburning stove, a dishwasher and washing machine, wifi and TV. The garden is enclosed. Bedding and towels are included. There's parking.

A couple of useful links: National Trust for Scotland Mull of Galloway and Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Trust.
