Ryan's Shepherd Hut is in The Garrison. That's a small complex of huts and apartments in Bowness on Solway, right on the Solway coast.
It's one of four huts. They're detached, so you have your own space. It sleeps up to three people in one room, bunk bed and a double. There's a small shower room. It’s a 3 Star place, which means it's clean and does the job, but it's simple. You get bedding and towels.
It’s glamping, so think of it as comfortable camping. It's a single room with a kitchen area. There's a small patio outside your door. The parking is on site.
The site itself is an old Roman fort. They found a lot of artefacts when they built it. There’s a small visitors’ centre with a model of the fort and you can buy Roman souvenirs if you want.
There’s a bistro on site that does food, and a gym you can use. A pub and a tearoom are a short walk away in the village. For more choice, Silloth is a ten minute drive along the coast. They’ve got cafes and a good golf course there.
The location is good if you like walking or cycling. It’s right on the Hadrian’s Cycleway route, and a lot of people doing the coast-to-coast walk stay here. It’s on the edge of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
You can see a lot from here within half an hour. Carlisle is about twenty minutes for the castle and shops. Southern Scotland and Gretna Green are close. The start of the Lake District National Park is about half an hour’s drive, near Keswick.
One well-behaved dog is allowed.
If you're coming with a bigger group, you can book more than one hut or an apartment. They're all on the same site.
