This is Ryan's Shepherd Hut. It's one of eight places on site at The Garrison in Bowness on Solway. It's a proper shepherd's hut, so it's compact, but it sleeps three. There's one bedroom area with a double bed and a single bunk above. One bathroom with a shower. It's got a 3 Star rating, which is about right. It's clean and has what you need, but it's not a hotel room.
The hut is detached so you've got your own space. There's a patio area outside. Bedding and towels are included. It has a TV and WiFi. Parking is on site. You can bring one dog.
The whole site is built on an old Roman fort. They found loads of bits and pieces when they were building it. There's a small visitors' centre with a model of the fort and you can buy Roman souvenirs. It's interesting for five minutes.
On site there's a gym you can use and a bistro that does good food. In the village, about a five minute walk, there's a pub that does food and a tearoom.
The location is the main thing. You're right on the Solway Coast, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The place is popular with people doing the coast-to-coast walk or cycling Hadrian's Cycleway, which goes past the door. If you want to drive, you're about half an hour from the northern part of the Lake District. Carlisle is about 20 minutes away. Southern Scotland and Gretna Green are within 30 minutes.
