Hannah's Shepherds Hut

Hannah's Shepherds Hut is in Bowness on Solway. It's at The Garrison, which is basically a small cluster of huts and apartments on the site of an old Roman fort. The huts are detached.

It sleeps up to three people. It's one room, with a double bed and a single bed in it. There's a small bathroom with a shower cubicle. It's got a 3 Star rating, so think simple and clean. You've got your own little patio area outside the door.

The hut has a woodburning stove which is the main heating, so you'll need to keep it ticking over in cooler weather. It's got a TV but the WiFi can be patchy because of the thick walls. That's the trade off.

On site, there's a small gym you can use and a bistro that does good food. The bistro kitchen is separate so check their opening times. There's also a tiny visitor centre about the Roman fort with a model of how it used to look.

You're right on Hadrian's Wall path and the coast-to-coast route, so it's popular with walkers. Cycle route 72 goes straight through. There's a local pub and a tearoom a short walk away in the village.

For a day out, Carlisle is about 20 minutes by car. You've got the castle and museums there. The western edge of the Lake District, like Cockermouth or Loweswater, is within half an hour if you want hills. Silloth is a 10 minute drive along the coast for a wider choice of cafes and a good links golf course.

The Solway Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's very flat, great for cycling and birdwatching. If you want the busier Lake District, Keswick is about an hour's drive.

You can bring one well-behaved dog. Bedding and towels are included. Parking is right next to the hut.
