The Barnacle Goose

The Barnacle Goose is just outside Bowness on Solway, right on the Solway coast. It's a barn conversion, stone-built, part of a row of three. The views are good. You look west over the marshes and the water to Scotland. The sunsets are the main event. There's a patio out front with seating, so you can sit and watch.

It sleeps up to eight. There are three bedrooms, but two are big. One has a super king bed and its own shower room. Another has a king bed. The third room has two sets of bunk beds, so it sleeps four, and it's got its own toilet. There's a family bathroom upstairs too. So, two toilets and two shower rooms in total.

Downstairs is all open plan. The ceilings are high, and you can see the original stone walls. It feels spacious. There's a big TV above the fireplace in the living area. The kitchen table is in a diner-style booth, which is good for meals and board games. It's a 5 Star place, so everything is new and works well.

You can bring up to two dogs. There's parking right outside. The garden is enclosed, which helps with dogs and kids. We provide a cot, highchair and stairgate.

Bowness itself is tiny. There's a pub, the King's Arms, about a ten-minute walk away. It's right on the water. For shops, you need to drive to Anthorn or Silloth. Silloth has a green, a cafe, and a small supermarket. It's about a ten-minute drive.

You're on the end of Hadrian's Wall Path here. The trail starts, or finishes, at the beach. It's very flat, so good for cycling or easy walks along the coast. The whole area is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There's a nature reserve next door for birdwatching.

Carlisle is about half an hour's drive east. You've got the castle and some shops there. The northern bits of the Lake District, like Keswick, are about 40 minutes south. If you cross the border into Scotland, Dumfries is less than an hour away. Hadrian's Wall sites like Birdoswald Fort are within a 30 minute drive.

In the shed, there's bike storage and a barbecue.
