Old Bakehouse

It's called the Old Bakehouse. It's in Walford, near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire. It's a 16th century timber-framed cottage that's attached to the main manor house on the Wythall estate. You're in the grounds, so there's a lot of land around you.

It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, one bathroom. The rating is 4 Star. The stairs are pretty steep, mind you. It's an old place.

The main thing is the setting. You've got your own garden with a table and chairs. There's a small lake with a stream running through it, so you get the sound of water. The woods start at the edge of the garden. You'll see deer, plenty of birds, sometimes badgers at night. Red kites are usually overhead.

You can walk straight from the door into the woods and around the estate. The owners have vineyards here. They make wine you can buy, and they do tours if you arrange it with them.

Ross-on-Wye is the nearest proper town, about ten minutes by car. You'll find supermarkets, shops, pubs and so on there. Symonds Yat is very close, maybe five minutes drive. It's a famous spot on the River Wye, good for a walk and a pub lunch. You can hire canoes there.

Hereford and Gloucester are each about half an hour away. The Forest of Dean is on your doorstep for more walking. Further out, within an hour or so, you've got places like Ludlow, Cheltenham, or even into Wales towards the Brecon Beacons.

Inside, it's open plan downstairs. Beams, leaded windows, that sort of thing. It's comfortable. The facilities are what you'd expect: TV, wifi, washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and highchair if you need them. You can bring up to two dogs. Parking is right outside.
