Hazel

This is Hazel. It's a small, detached cabin, or bothy, on the edge of a forest near Logie Coldstone. It's about as off-grid as you get while still having a toilet and a shower. It runs on solar and a wood burner.

It says it sleeps four, but honestly, it's one bedroom with a double bed and then a sofa bed in the living space. It's really best for a couple, maybe with two kids. There's one bathroom with a shower.

The wood burner is the main source of heat, so you need to be okay with keeping that going if it's cold. The electricity comes from solar panels, so it's enough for lights and charging phones, but don't expect to run a hair dryer and a kettle at the same time. The water is from a spring. It's all very straightforward.

You're right in the Cairngorms National Park. The forest is on your doorstep for walks. You can see the mountains from the clearing. It's very quiet. You can bring up to two dogs.

In terms of things to do, you're in a good spot for it. Ballater is about a 15 minute drive for shops and cafés. For proper hills, you're already in them. Loch Muick is a half hour drive for a good walk. Cairngorms National Park has all the walking and cycling routes.

The Crathes Castle gardens are worth a visit, about 25 minutes away by car. If you're into whisky, there are a few distilleries along Royal Deeside within a 30 minute radius.

What's here: the wood burner, bedding and towels are included, there's a garden area with seating, and parking right next to the cabin. There's space to store bikes if you bring them.
