The Hideaway
The Hideaway is in Quatford, just outside Bridgnorth. It's a place for being outdoors. It's on three acres of woodland, down a country lane. You can't drive right up to it. You park in the adjacent field and walk down, about a minute's walk.
It sleeps three. There's a shepherd's hut with a double bed, and a separate garden room with a single bed that can pull out for two children. There's one bathroom, but it's an outdoor toilet and a heated outdoor shower.
The living is mostly outside. There's a covered outdoor kitchen built into a shed, with a fridge and what you need to cook. There's a fire pit for barbecues. It's off-grid. Solar panels run the lights, fridge, and a couple of sockets. There's no mains electricity, no TV, and no Wi-Fi. You get a starter pile of logs for the fire.
Because it's in the woods, you need proper shoes and a torch. The ground is uneven, with brambles and rabbit holes. The tree cover means it gets dark quickly. The owners point out they can't control the weather, so pack for it.
There's a good local pub about a mile away. Bridgnorth is just over five minutes by car. It's a nice town with decent restaurants, takeaways, and shops. You can walk by the River Severn, see the castle, or go on the cliff railway.
The Severn Valley Railway is close by for a steam train ride. For a day out, the Dudmaston Estate or Wightwick Manor and Gardens are within half an hour. Shrewsbury and Ironbridge are also easy to reach.
Facilities: everything's included for the solar power, bedding and towels are provided, there's parking in the field, and one well-behaved dog is allowed. It's a unique sort of place.
