Lantern Cottage dates back to circa 1600. At one time the cottage was known as Drum Cottage due to an old military drum having been excavated in the grounds. Over the years many items of interest have been dug up including coins, bottles and various other items of historical interest. On 5th March 1646, the Parliament of Oliver Cromwell issued an order for the destruction of Corfe Castle in Dorset. Cart loads of gunpowder were taken to the castle, and then what had been one of the strongest fortresses in Britain was blasted into the ruin which it remains to this day. It is folklore that Oliver Cromwell rode with his army through Colehill and that Lantern Cottage had been a farriers dwelling where Cromwell’s horses were shod and refreshed and it is rumoured he stayed here. Also, 5 minutes away from Lantern Cottage is God’s Blessing Lane where it is said his troops were blessed before going into battle at Corfe Castle.
