The Old Chapel is in Slaley village. It’s exactly what it says, a converted chapel. It’s detached and you’ve got the whole place to yourselves.
It sleeps eight. Four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. That’s handy with a full house. The rating is 5 Star, so it’s well finished and comfortable. It was all done up in 2020. The main living area is open plan downstairs, with a wood burner. There’s a bedroom and a shower room on the ground floor as well, which is useful.
Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms. The beds are big, six foot wide. One of the en-suites has a roll top bath. There’s also a small snug room up there if someone wants to sit quietly.
The garden is enclosed. There’s parking right outside. It has all the things you’d expect: WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher. Bedding and towels are included. You can bring one well-behaved dog.
Slaley is a quiet village. There are two pubs, both about 200 yards away. They do food. The local shop is 500 yards.
You can start walks straight from the door. The countryside around here is good for walking and cycling. The golf course is very close if that’s your thing.
Hexham is six miles away. It’s a proper market town with shops and places to eat. Hexham Abbey and the Old Gaol are worth a look. Corbridge village is about the same distance.
Hadrian’s Wall is a short drive away, maybe ten or fifteen minutes. You can walk sections of it or visit the Roman forts like Chesters, Vindolanda, or Housesteads. It’s a big draw for the area.
If you’re planning ahead, the Northumberland National Park website is useful, and English Heritage has details on all the Roman sites.
