Church View Cottage & Barn is in Hatherleigh. The town is small, with a couple of pubs you can walk to. It's on the Tarka Trail and the Devon Coast to Coast route, so it's good for cyclists.
It's actually two buildings, the cottage and a barn at the back. Together they sleep twelve. The barn feels a bit like its own small apartment, so it works for a bigger family or a group that wants a bit of space from each other.
It's a 4 Star rating. That means it's comfortable and well-equipped, but it's not a show home. Things are where they are because of the old building. There are steps between some rooms inside the cottage and stairs going up to the bedrooms in the barn.
The kitchen in the cottage is fine for cooking. The barn has a smaller kitchenette, better for basics. There's a wood burner in the main living area for cooler nights. The garden is a courtyard, enclosed.
You can bring up to two dogs. There's parking on site. Bedding and towels are included, and there's a cot and highchair if you need them.
For days out, Dartmoor is right on the doorstep. The north Devon coast, like Westward Ho!, is about half an hour's drive. The National Trust Devon page has good ideas. Visit Devon covers the wider area if you're planning trips.
