Heron's Rest

This is Heron's Rest. It's a small, detached cottage in Glen Dale on the Isle of Skye. There's no one attached, so it's just you and the view.

It's for two people. One bedroom, one bathroom. The rating is 3 Star, which is about right. It's comfortable and everything works, but it's not a hotel. It's a simple base.

The main thing is the location. You're a five-minute walk from the shore. From the front you look out west over Loch Pooltiel to the sea. From the back, you've got the view east to Macleod's Tables, those two flat-topped hills.

Inside, it's all open plan downstairs. There's a woodburning stove which makes it very cosy. It has a washing machine, WiFi, and TV. Bedding and towels are included. There's parking right outside.

You can bring up to two dogs. There isn't a garden, but with the coast on the doorstep it doesn't really matter.

For shops, you need to go about a mile and a half. The nearest pub is nine miles away, so it's a drive. There's a restaurant about four miles off.

If you're active, this is a good spot. You can walk straight out the door. Mountain biking, climbing, kayaking. It's all here. For a day out, Dunvegan Castle isn't far. Portree is the main town on the island, about a 25-minute drive. Talisker Distillery is down the road if you like whisky.

Further south, around Armadale, it's greener. They call it the Garden of Skye. You can visit Armadale Castle and its gardens. The whole coastline is good for wildlife spotting.

But honestly, a lot of people just come to be here. To sit with a book and watch the light change on the water and the hills. That's what the place is for.
