The Curve At Caerlaverock Estate
The Curve is a small, modern cottage on our family estate near Dumfries. It's for two people only. We built it a few years ago to try something different.
It's detached and sits on a hillside field. The main thing is the view. The front is almost all glass, with big doors that open right up. You look out over the Solway Firth to the Lake District on a clear day. There are no other houses in sight, just our sheep and cattle.
Inside, it's all one open space. The bed's at one end, the sitting area with a wood burner is in the middle, and the kitchen's at the other. The bathroom has a bath with a window above it. It's well insulated and has underfloor heating.
Outside, there's a private wood-fired hot tub on the deck. You get that and the view to yourselves.
It's a five minute drive down to the little village of Glencaple on the River Nith. They have a shop and a good restaurant on the quay. The WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre is just down the road. It's excellent for birdwatching.
Caerlaverock Castle, which is a ruin with a moat, is about ten minutes away by car. Dumfries, the main town, is about fifteen minutes. The Galloway coast and hills are within half an hour for beaches or walking.
It's a quiet spot. You're really here for the peace and the view. The facilities are all modern. There's parking right next to it. No pets allowed, I'm afraid.
