Struie View is a fantastic caravan and place to stay in the far north of Scotland. Perfectly placed between the golden sands of Dornoch Beach and the world-famous Royal Dornoch Golf Links - and overlooking the nine-hole Struie golf course. The lovely village of Dornoch complete with cathedral, hotel, pubs, restaurants, cafes and other independent shops is only a five-minute walk away. You can be on the beach, at the first tee or relaxing with a drink in the village, all in only a few minutes on foot from the caravan. It’s a perfect position that you won’t want or need to stray far from.
However, the Northern Highlands is an outstanding place to explore. Dornoch is just in the old county of Sutherland and along with Caithness further north you have an endless list of places to visit via both the NC500 touring road and also the interior roads criss-crossing the northern part of Scotland. John O’Groats will lure visitors north from Dornoch, and quite right it’s an iconic spot. But go a little east from John O’Groats and enjoy Duncansby Head and Stacks. A truly unique spot. West of John O’Groats the north coast of Scotland awaits your exploration. The Castle of Mey is worth a trip in season, Dunnet Head and Beach are fantastic places. And there are many world-renown surfing beaches at Thurso, Dunnet Beach, and beyond to the west at Melvich and Strathy. The Orkney Islands for a day trip is also a possibility as there’s a quick ferry from John O’Groats on which you stand a great chance to see awesome wildlife such as dolphins and whales. Orca are regularly seen in these parts in the spring and summer months.
The road up to the north coast introduces you to marvellous places like Golspie and Brora, both home to amazing links golf courses that you must try if you’re up playing Dornoch. Brora has an awesome, long sandy beach as well. The river at Brora and then at Helmsdale, the next village up the road, are famous salmon rivers that you should attempt to fish if that way inclined. Beyond Helmsdale you have spectacular cliff top driving to Wick. If following the River Helmsdale inland you will experience a land almost forgotten, it’s one of the best routes in the Highlands. You’ll see red deer as you journey up the strath and then the wild, open, expanse peaks at Forsinard where there’s a famous RSPB site. Do get out and walk the boardwalk to one of the coolest bird hides in Europe!
The interior road beyond Forsinard takes you to the north coast and sandy Melvich. You will follow the Halladale River from Forsinard down to the coast, which is run as a charity fishery, meaning it’s much more accessible for those wanting to go after salmon. Enquire with the organisation for more information and permits.
So back to the accommodation, Struie View is a perfect refuge for a couple or family of up to six. It has been finished nicely by the owners and there’s room to relax inside and out on the spacious decking. It’s a lovely place to return to after days out at the beach, on the golf course or exploring the far north of Scotland.
