You look across farmland to the Dornoch Firth and beyond to dramatic Sutherland coastline stretching north. Another thing you’ll immediately notice is how big the sky is at Apple Lodge. The Tarbat Peninsula is quite flat compared to its Highland surroundings, so this means that the sunrises and sunsets, the star gazing and also the Northern Lights in the winter are truly fantastic. At Apple Lodge, you’re only a mile from the the quaint fishing village Portmahomack. There’s a broad sandy Blue Flag beach stretching west from the village with multiple places to eat and drink in the village. Close by in Rockfield, a small single-street hamlet, is the home to 16th-century Ballone Castle. Beyond at the eastern end of the Tarbat Peninsula, about 3 miles from Portmahomack, is the striking, picture-perfect lighthouse of Tarbat Ness built in 1830. There’s a wonderful walk that starts and finishes in Portmahomack which showcases the local highlights.
