This traditional fisherman’s cottage is situated at the picturesque harbour in the seaside village of Helmsdale, with gorgeous views out to the North Sea. With accommodation over two floors, there is a living room with a small dining area with a wood burner for those cosy nights in, as well as a fitted kitchen. There are two spacious double bedrooms served by a family bathroom. Helmsdale village has all the local amenities you could ever need, including a grocery store, library, nine-hole golf course, Timespan Museum and local history archive, pubs, restaurants, and medical centre all within walking distance from the cottage.
Helmsdale is a beautiful coastal fishing port in a spectacular setting at the estuary of the River Helmsdale, in the northeast of Sutherland and about one and half hours drive from Inverness. Although its roots reach back as far as the Viking era, the village as you see it now was a planned village to re-house communities fragmented by the Highland Clearances and was once the home of one of the largest herring fleets in Europe. The river Helmsdale is well known for its salmon fishing, and the quality of fishing and availability of fresh seafood and crabs from local fishing boats makes Helmsdale an extremely popular holiday destination. The river Helmsdale tumbles and winds its way down the beautiful Strath of Kildonan, and there are many beautiful walks to be enjoyed. The area is renowned for its beautiful scenery and sits on the NC500 route. Using Helmsdale as your base, John O’Groats and the Orkney Islands are within easy reach and the whole of Sutherland is at your doorstep.
You may just want to sit by the harbour and watch the boats come and go, explore the beaches for gemstones, go bird watching, or do hill walking. Fish for salmon or sea trout or visit one of the many lochs in the area for brown trout fishing. Visit some of the many ancient broch and cairns or spend an afternoon at nearby Dunrobin Castle.
