This area is rich in native wildlife, with red deer, ospreys and red kites to name but a few. There are many beautiful gardens in the area to visit that benefit from the warm air of the Gulf Stream. Galloway Forest Park is a huge natural wonderland of forested glens, lochs and towering hills which, due to its small number of buildings and hence very little amount of light pollution, was the very first national park in the UK to be honoured with Dark Sky Park status.
The forest park and nearby Galloway Forest also offer a chance for more adventurous holidaymakers to get their blood pumping with its 7 Stanes mountain biking trail centres. The coastline is just stunning with clifftop walks. There are sandy beaches, shingle and rocky coves to explore and birdlife in abundance. The RSPB Mull of Galloway with thousands of nesting birds is close by and the visitor centre is worth a visit. The town of Stranraer is nearby and offers shops, restaurants and pubs. There is a small shop and post office nearby on Station street, just 100 yards from the cottage, and is open Monday’s to Friday morning’s.
There is sea fishing from Portpatrick and both trout and salmon fishing close by. Other country pursuits are available including shooting and riding. Day trips to Ireland can be taken by ferry from Cairnryan. Shop, pub and restaurant 5 miles.
