Rose Cottage is in Rochester, which is up in the Northumberland National Park. It’s a small, old stone cottage, built as a fortified house in the 1580s. It’s right inside the earthworks of the Bremenium Roman Fort, so there are old walls and mounds all around it. You can’t really miss the history.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, one bathroom. It’s got a 3 Star rating, which is about right. It’s clean and warm, but it’s an old building so the doors are low and the floors aren’t level. That’s just how it is. There’s a woodburning stove for heat.
The garden is enclosed. It’s quiet out there, just fields and sheep. You’re in a Dark Sky Park, so on a clear night you can just stand outside and see everything.
For getting out, Otterburn is about four miles away for a shop. Bellingham is twenty minutes drive for more bits and bobs. The area is mainly for walking or cycling. You’re on the edge of Kielder Forest, ten minutes away. Hadrian’s Wall and all the Roman forts like Vindolanda are about half an hour south. The Northumberland coast, like Alnmouth or Craster, is a good hour’s drive for a day out.
In the cottage there’s a washing machine, a dishwasher, WiFi, and parking right outside. All bedding and towels are included. No pets.
