Playden is a small quiet village situated within a mile of Rye. The Playden Oasts Inn is just a short walk from the house serving locally sourced food. Rye is a delightfully photogenic town with a uniquely unhurried atmosphere. It is famous for its independent shops and galleries along with a wide variety of local delis banks green grocers, restaurants, pubs and everything else you would expect from a bustling high street. The town regularly holds renowned local festivals, including Scallops in February, Jazz in August, Arts and Music in September, Wild boar in October the amazing Bonfire procession in November and a themed Christmas celebration every year.
Just a 10-minute drive away is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve where you can walk along the sea wall and out on to the marshes to enjoy flora and fauna. A fantastic new Visitor Centre is due to open here in 2021. You can choose to walk out to Camber Castle originally located on a shingle spit where it once protected the towns of Rye and Winchelsea before the sea receded. Although no longer open to visitors it is still a striking landmark to see. The award-winning beach of Camber Sands is also just a short drive away west and has mile upon mile of vast sandy beaches and dunes to explore. Head east to visit Winchelsea or the rock pools at low tide on the pebbly beach at Pett Level also just a 10-minute drive from Rye.
For wine enthusiasts Chapel Down Vineyard is well worth a visit where their world class award-winning wines can be sampled and bought. The towns of Hastings and Ashford are around a 30-minute drive and here you can get mainline trains to London if you wish to explore the capital for a day. Battle Bodiam and Tenterden are within easy reach by car too and are a great towns to explore. If you would like to take a day trip to the continent the Eurostar can be picked up from Ashford International station where trains to Paris, Lille and Bruges are available. Alternatively, the Channel Tunnel runs from Folkestone or ferries from Dover both around a 45-minute drive. Beach 4½ miles. Shop ¾ mile, pub 170 yards and restaurant 1 mile.
