Mill Barn is situated in the heart of Red House Common, part of the larger Chailey Common which is one of the largest in the south of England stretching over 180 hectares, and was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1966. It is a site of Special Scientific Interest for its heathland plants and diverse insect and bird communities. Exmoor ponies live and graze on the land at various times of the year. Step out of the door and straight onto Chailey Common for abundant walks across this beautiful East Sussex heritage landscape. Mill Barn is also ideally located within 5 miles of both the South Downs National Park and Ashdown Forest. A few miles away and you can explore over 250 acres of parkland at the National Trust’s Sheffield Park and while walking in the parkland you will often hear the sound of the steam trains at the nearby Bluebell Railway. Fifteen minutes further north and you can discover Wakehurst Place which has been cared for and developed by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew for the last 50 years.
Just 50 metres down the lane from the cottage, Chailey Windmill is a Grade II listed smock mill open to the public on various dates during the summer months. Further afield, head to Lewes to spend some time wandering around the pretty centre of this historic market town and visiting many of the antique and craft shops, bars and restaurants. Continue on 20 minutes from Lewes and you will be on the Sussex coast. Visit the vibrant city of Brighton with its lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere or head further east towards the traditional seaside towns of Seaford and Eastbourne. For opera lovers, Glyndebourne Opera House is 20 minutes away.
