Newtonmore is a quiet village. There's a local pub within walking distance. Fishing on the River Spey is nearby, and there's a golf course too.
You're right in the Cairngorms National Park. The walking is the main thing. You can start right from the door. For bigger hills, the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre is about a 20-minute drive. In winter, that's where you go for skiing or sledging.
The Highland Folk Museum is in the village. It's free and good for a wet day. Aviemore is about a 15-minute drive away for more shops and a cinema.
The roads north to Inverness or south to Pitlochry are straightforward. Both are about a 40-minute drive.
