The Calf Shed is one of three old barns we converted, just outside Alston. It's down our lane, behind our house, so it's quiet. You get the place to yourselves.
It sleeps two. One bedroom with the bathroom right next to it. It's got a 3 Star rating, meaning it's comfy and clean but not posh. It's open plan, so the living space and kitchen are all one room.
You've got a patio area with a table and chairs. The hot tub is shared between the three barns - it's over near our house with a good view towards Mount Hooley and the valley. You book slots for it.
Alston town is about a mile down the hill. It's a proper little place with cobbles and small shops. There's a pub that does food, a couple of cafes, and a co-op for basics. The South Tynedale Railway is there if you like steam trains.
The Pennine Way footpath runs right past the end of our lane. You can walk from the door for miles. For a drive, the North Pennines are all around. Hadrian's Wall is about half an hour east. The Lake District is an hour or so west, depending on traffic.
Inside there's a TV, Wi-Fi, a washing machine, and bedding and towels are included. There's bike storage if you bring them. One well-behaved dog is allowed. Parking is right outside.
If you're planning walks, the North Pennines AONB site has maps. For history, English Heritage on Hadrian's Wall is useful.
