The Old Granary is just outside Newent. It's a conversion, so it's a big, open sort of place downstairs, not a tiny cottage. It sleeps eight, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's got a 3 Star rating, which is about right. It's comfortable and everything works, but it's not designer.
The main thing is the space and the stuff you can do here without getting in the car. There's a proper swimming pool you can use. It's shared with the other cottages on the site, but you book slots so it's not crowded. There's a tennis court too. The garden is enclosed, so it's safe for kids to run around. There's a summerhouse out there with a fridge and a sink, handy for poolside drinks.
You can walk along the brook into Newent town. It takes about 20 minutes. There are a couple of pubs and the usual shops there. Newent has a nice lake with a picnic area.
If you drive, there's a lot around. The Forest of Dean is about a 20-minute drive for walking and cycling. Gloucester is about 15-20 minutes away. The cathedral is worth seeing, and the docks are interesting. The Three Choirs Vineyard is nearby if you like wine. For a day out, the Cotswolds towns like Stow-on-the-Wold aren't far.
Inside, it's got a wood-burning stove for cooler evenings. There's a dishwasher and a washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. There's a cot and a highchair if you need them. Parking is right outside.
A couple of things plainly: because it's a converted granary, the ceilings are high and the rooms are big, but the layout is what it is. Also, no pets allowed, sorry.
