The Retreat is in Kirklington, a quiet village in Nottinghamshire. It's a detached single-storey cabin, but with a bedroom up in the roof space. You get the whole place and the garden to yourselves.
It sleeps four, but that's in one king-size bed upstairs and a double sofa bed in the living room below. So it suits a couple, or maybe a couple with two kids. It's got a 4 Star rating, which means it's well-finished and comfortable. The stairs up to the bedroom are a ship's ladder style, so they're steep and not very wide. Fine for most, but something to know if you have mobility issues.
The garden is enclosed, which is good if you're bringing a dog. There's parking right outside.
Kirklington itself is very small and quiet. There's a village church. For a pub or shops, you'd drive to Southwell or Newark, which are about ten minutes away. Newark has the castle and the National Civil War Centre if you're into history.
For a big day out, Sherwood Forest is about half an hour's drive. The visitor centre there is good, especially if you've got kids. Clumber Park is a bit closer, maybe twenty minutes, and that's great for walking, cycling, or just a coffee in the stableyard.
Inside, it's all open plan downstairs. The kitchen's fine for making meals. There's a washing machine, WiFi, and the bedding and towels are included. The shower room is en-suite, upstairs with the bedroom.
