Dukes Wood

Dukes Wood is in Caunton, Nottinghamshire. It's on a working farm in the Beck Valley. The views are mostly fields, which I like.

It sleeps six. Two bedrooms upstairs, both doubles, and a double sofa bed downstairs. One bathroom with a shower. It's got a 4 Star rating. It's comfortable and clean.

The cottage is open plan downstairs. There's a patio and garden area that's just for you. You can see the farm from there. There's a hot tub too.

Being a farm, it's quiet. There's no street lighting, so the night sky is clear if you're into that. There are footpaths right from the door. One of them goes about a mile to Winkburn, which has a micro-brewery with a taproom.

The farm does a couple of things you can book. There's a tractor trailer ride through their private woodland to the brewery. You might see deer or hares. In spring, the bluebells are good. They also do a farm tour with their son, Charles. You can see some animals and sit in a tractor.

The facilities are what you'd expect: dishwasher, washing machine, TV, wifi. Bedding and towels are included. Parking is right there.

For days out, Southwell is close. It's a nice little town with a minster and some shops. Newark-on-Trent is about seven miles away. It's a proper market town with a castle and a river.

Within about half an hour's drive, you've got a few options. Clumber Park is good for walking. Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak are there. Rufford Abbey and Newstead Abbey are similar. For something different, Cresswell Crags is an ice age gorge with caves. Sherwood Pines has cycling trails and a Go Ape.

If you want a city, Lincoln or Nottingham are both about 30 minutes by car. Lincoln has the cathedral and castle. Nottingham has the city caves and theatres. You can get the train from Newark too.

If you're a bigger group, you can book Dukes Wood together with the cottage next door, Halfmoon Wood. That sleeps twelve in total.
