The Old School House

The Old School House is in Horrabridge, right on the edge of Dartmoor. It used to be the village school, built in 1875. It's a very big stone building. It sleeps 24 people across seven bedrooms. There are six bathrooms. It's got a 5 Star grading, which means it's well-equipped and in good order.

The space is the main thing. It's 5000 square feet. The kitchen and dining area are huge, with an island and seating for everyone. The living room is also enormous, with two big sofa areas and a wood burner. There's a games room with a pool table and dartboard.

The layout is a bit unusual because it was a school. The building is basically in two parts connected by a hallway. One part has the main kitchen and living spaces. The other part has an extra, smaller kitchen and living area upstairs, plus two bedrooms. There are three staircases in total. One of them is a spiral staircase. Some of the stairs are steep or narrow, which is fairly typical for an old building like this.

Two of the bedrooms have freestanding bathtubs in them. The master bedroom is particularly large. There's also a double bedroom on the ground floor.

Outside, there's a big enclosed garden with a lawn and a large decked area. There's a BBQ, outdoor seating, and a children's play area with swings and a slide. There are two hot tubs. Parking isn't a problem, there's space for eight cars plus a covered carport.

Horrabridge is a proper village with a green, a bridge over the river, and all the basics. There's a post office shop, a bakery, a chippy, and two pubs. Tavistock is about ten minutes drive away for a bigger supermarket and the pannier market.

You're literally on the doorstep of Dartmoor National Park for walking. Within half an hour you can drive to Plymouth for the Barbican and the Hoe, or to the Tamar Valley. The beaches at the south coast, like Bantham or Bigbury, are about a 40 minute drive.

Facilities: everything you'd expect is here. Washing machine, dishwasher, cots, bedding and towels included. Bicycle storage. You can bring up to four dogs. Useful links for planning: National Trust Devon and English Heritage for local properties.
