Monkwood Cottage

Monkwood Cottage is in Ponsonby, Cumbria. It's a detached sandstone cottage. The place is set back off the lane, with its own garden and a bit of private woodland that runs down to the River Calder.

It sleeps four, but there are four bedrooms. Two are up in the attic. They're single rooms with low headroom, so they're really just for kids. The other two bedrooms are on the first floor, a king size and a double. There's one bathroom, which has both a bath and a separate shower.

The kitchen has a Rayburn, which heats the house in winter. There's also a regular electric oven and hob. The living and dining room is open plan with a big wood burner. The windows are large, so you get a good view of the garden and the river. Outside, there's a bothy next door that's been made into a utility room with a washing machine, dryer, and freezer.

The garden is lawned and there's a patio. You have fishing rights on the stretch of river in the woodland. It's catch and release for brown trout and salmon in season.

You're on the western edge of the Lake District National Park. It's quiet here. Wasdale and Scafell Pike are about a 20-minute drive. The coast at Whitehaven is about 15 minutes away. For local attractions, The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and Muncaster Castle are both within half an hour.

There's a pub you can walk to in the village. A proper village shop is in Gosforth, about three and a half miles away.

Facilities are all included: bedding, towels, WiFi, parking. There's a cot if you need it. No pets.
