You're right on the edge of Hadrian's Wall country. Birdoswald Roman Fort is two miles away. Lanercost Priory is close by too. For a longer walk or drive, Vindolanda and Housesteads forts are about ten miles. Talkin Tarn Country Park is good for a stroll around the lake.
Carlisle is a 20 minute drive for bigger shops. You can be at the edge of the Lake District, or over the border into Scotland, in under half an hour.
