St Cyrus has a post office, hotel and local store, all of which are within a 5-minute walk. Situated at the north of a large basin, the area is home to many wading birds and seasonal visitors throughout the year. St Cyrus’ beach is a renowned National Nature Reserve with wide sandy spaces, rock pools and opportunities to spot whales, dolphins, seals and otters.
St Cyrus is part of the area historically known as The Howe of the Mearns, a large valley stretching from the base of the Grampian Mountains to the North Sea. It is rich in history and folklore, as displayed at Grassic Gibbon Centre in Laurencekirk, with many historic properties to visit including Edzell Castle and Gardens, Arbuthnott House and Dunottar Castle. There’s superb walking along the cliffs to Inverbervie, several forest trails and legendary waterfalls to discover. There are several excellent golf clubs within a short drive, as well as a nmber of nearby distilleries and breweries offering a distinctive taste of the area.
Laurencekirk, 7 miles away, has a wide range of amenities from supermarkets and butchers to pubs, bakers and eateries. Montrose, with its historical architecture, is uniquely set on a large tidal lagoon. Dundee, only 40 miles away, is the only UNESCO City of Design in the UK and is home to the V and A Museum, the RRS Discovery and the DC Thomson comic empire. Beach 1 mile.
