Location wise, it's a bit of a crossroads. You're between the Lake District National Park and the Northumberland National Park. The Solway Coast and the Scottish Borders are a short drive. Gretna Green is three miles away if that's of interest. Hadrian's Wall is within easy reach too, managed by English Heritage.
