House Of Machrie

This is the House of Machrie on the Isle of Arran. It's a big old Victorian house that sleeps fourteen people, so it's good for a family gathering or a group of friends.

There are seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, which helps with a crowd. It's got a 5 Star rating, which means it's been done up to a high standard. It's comfortable.

The house looks out over farmland to the sea, towards the Mull of Kintyre. The views are really something. There's a circular tower with the main staircase in it. The garden is enclosed.

Out the back, in a stone barn, there's a games room. Table tennis and a pool table. It's handy if the weather turns.

The place is on the Dougarie Estate, which is a working farm. They offer activities you can book, like fishing on the River Iorsa, clay shooting, or golf on their 9-hole links course. You can arrange things like whisky tours or photography workshops if you want. Details are on their site.

For a swim or a walk, the coast is about a mile away. The nearest shop and pub are in Machrie, three miles up the road.

In terms of what's there: plenty of parking, a washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, and a woodburning stove. Bedding and towels are included. It is wheelchair accessible at the entrance. You can bring two dogs.

If you're planning ahead, the National Trust for Scotland Arran page is useful, and VisitScotland's Arran guide has general information.
