The Haybarn

The Haybarn is a converted barn near Thorgill, just outside Rosedale Abbey. It’s set back from the lane, up a bit of a slope, with views across the fields. Honestly, the main thing is the space. It sleeps ten, with five bedrooms and an en-suite for nearly every one, which is handy with a big group.

Inside, it's big and open. The ceilings are beamed, the floors are oak. The living room has four sofas around the wood burner, all facing the window for the view. There’s a separate games room with a console and some board games. The kitchen table is huge.

Two bedrooms are downstairs, a double and a twin, both with their own shower rooms. Upstairs there are three more bedrooms – another double with an en-suite, plus a double and a twin that share another shower room.

Outside, there’s a private patio with seating. Beyond that is a large paddock you can use in the summer.

The location is good for walking or cycling straight from the door. Paths lead into the moors and forests. Rosedale Abbey village is about a mile and a half away. It’s small, but it has a couple of pubs, a shop, and cafes. You can walk the old ironstone railway track from there.

Within about a 30 minute drive you’ve got Dalby Forest for cycling and walking trails. Hutton-le-Hole is a pretty village with a folk museum. Castle Howard is a bit further, but worth the trip if you like stately homes. Pickering has the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby. The coast – Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough – is about half an hour away.

It’s a 4 Star property. That means it’s well-equipped and comfortable. The facilities list is accurate: WiFi, TV, dishwasher, washing machine, parking, all bedding and towels included. We can provide a cot and highchair. We accept up to two dogs.

If you need even more space, The Haybarn can be booked together with Stable Cottage next door, to sleep fifteen in total.
