The Laurels is our house. It's in Carnach, which is a spot about five miles outside Forres in Aberdeenshire. It's a proper detached house, not a cottage. Sleeps six, in three bedrooms. It's got two bathrooms which helps.
It’s got a four star rating. It feels more like a comfortable, modern family house than a traditional holiday let. Everything’s there. Washing machine, dishwasher, wood burner, that sort of thing. The WiFi is fine.
The garden is a decent size, private, with a barbecue. The best bit is the garden backs right onto the Dava Way. That’s one of Scotland's Great Trails, an old railway line you can walk or cycle for miles. The old Dunphail station platform is just across the road, but it’s mostly overgrown now.
Forres is about ten minutes by car. It’s got supermarkets, shops, a few pubs and cafes. Nairn and its beach is about twenty minutes the other way, on the Moray Firth coast.
If you like walking, you’re set. Randolph’s Leap, where the Findhorn river cuts through a gorge, is five minutes away. The woods and moorland start a couple of minutes up the road from the house.
For a day out, Brodie Castle is less than fifteen minutes drive. Aviemore and the start of the Cairngorms are about thirty-five minutes. If you want to go to Loch Ness or the Culloden battlefield, that’s under an hour. The National Trust for Scotland page for Brodie Castle has the details.
This is malt whisky country. Benromach distillery is in Forres. The Speyside distilleries, like Glenfiddich, are about forty minutes inland.
You can bring up to two dogs. There's a cot if you need it. All bedding and towels are included. Plenty of parking on the gravel drive.
A couple of useful links for planning: Walkhighlands for routes and The Malt Whisky Trail for the distilleries.
