There's a shop, a pub, and a restaurant about three miles away in Mauchline. For a beach, you're looking at about a 20 minute drive to the Ayrshire coast.
The location is good for walking and cycling on the quiet lanes. You can pick up the River Ayr Way and the Ayrshire Coastal Path nearby. This is Burns Country, so you've got Robert Burns' Cottage and the Brig o' Doon in Alloway, which is about a 20 minute drive.
If you want a big day out, the Galloway Forest Park is about 25 minutes south. It's a huge area for walking. It's also a Dark Sky Park. Loch Lomond, Glasgow, and Edinburgh are all within an hour or so by car.
