Parkhurst Cottage

Parkhurst Cottage is in Hillgrove, West Sussex. It's one of those traditional estate cottages, set right at the bottom of Black Down. That's the highest point in the South Downs National Park.

It sleeps four. Two bedrooms upstairs and one bathroom. It's got a 4 Star rating, which I think reflects that it's comfortable and well looked after. The stairs are normal cottage stairs. The door latches are the old-fashioned kind, which some people like. They make a solid click.

The garden is private. There's a very small brook at the side. You get a view over fields from there.

Inside, it's laid out how you'd expect: a living room with a woodburner, a separate dining room, and the kitchen. The main bedroom has a super king bed that can be made into twins if you ask beforehand. The bathroom has a full bath with a shower over it. There's also a separate toilet downstairs.

You're out in the lanes here. The nearest pub is about a mile away, in Lurgashall. It's a proper village pub on the green. The shop and post office are there too, about two miles. For a bigger shop, you'd drive to Haslemere, which is just over the border in Surrey and about ten minutes by car.

Black Down itself is right there for walking. It's all heather and pine trees with good paths. The poet Tennyson used to walk up there. You can drive to the top car park in a few minutes.

Lurgashall Winery is about a mile down the lane. They do tours and have a tearoom. Petworth is about a fifteen minute drive. Petworth House is the big draw, with the art and the deer park. Midhurst is about the same distance, with the Cowdray ruins and polo. The South Downs National Park website has walking maps.

For facilities: there's parking right outside, a washing machine, a dishwasher, wifi, and a TV. Bedding and towels are included. We can put a cot in if you need one. There's a barbecue in the garden. Sorry, no pets.
